The evolving story of Moloch as a form of child sacrifice: traditionally it was considered to be an old Canaanite god but more recently the evidence points to Moloch being the name for the sacrifice itself. The practice spread to Carthage with the Phoenician founders from Tyre (Lebanon) . Moloch was often described as a practice of placing children inside or on a burning hot metal effigy. The effigy has the body of a man and the head of a bull and its arms are held out ready for offerings. However, it is still not clear whether it was an actual child sacrifice (as seems likely) or perhaps a pagan hangover which involved a painful fiery rite of passage.

According to tradition, the Minotaur was a part man part bull offspring of the wife of King Minos of Crete (Pasiphaë) and a bull that she was impelled to fall in love with. This was as punishment from Poseidon to Minos for substituting the bull in a sacrificial offering that was made to Poseidon. The Minotaur was held in a labyrinth in Crete. Every nine years the people of Athens had to choose seven men and seven women to be offered as sacrificial victims to the Minotaur in retribution for the killing of Minos’s son Androgeos in Athens.

Commentary:
The central premise of the poem is that Europe has been giving their tribute to the American gods of war for a long time. This appeasement has involved sacrifices of many lives over the last 80 years since WW2. In truth, too many were largely fine with these sacrifices (Moloch) to the Minotaur as long as it was other people’s children – particularly Arabs and Muslims in the Middle East. However, that is no longer enough. In seeking to avoid facing the growing problem of American-Israeli violence we have helped to increase the power of the Minotaur which now demands ever greater tribute and sacrifices – and so our children may be next.
Arabs and Muslims are the 21st century’s Jews. The undefended vilified ‘other’. It is Nazified thinking either by racist fascists or, more banally and more often, those that have thoughtlessly forgotten to pay attention to recent European history and basic ethical principles. It must be never again for everyone or it is for no one.

For the record: I am pro-Jewish but anti-fascist (whether Jewish or otherwise) – we must resist those who are in love with murder and cruelty and who will also destroy Israel eventually (just as Hitler destroyed Germany). It is deeply anti-semitic to equate the current fascist leaders of Israel and all Jews (German leaders should take particular note).
